How I Got Here
Dawn M Hemming
Professional Info
I'm a partly self-taught knitwear and homeware designer. I have a City & Guilds in Hand Knit with Design and have over 35 years experience of the craft, and 20 years experiance of designing my own pieces.
I like to work with natural fibres and vibrant colour combinations, preferring to work in the round with fair isle patterns. I love colour, texture and shaping.
My Story
Unlike most people who learn to knit as a child, instead of giving up in my teens or even later in life, my craft became an obsession that is only recently becoming a career.
When I was a teenager in the late 1980ies I worked in a knitting warehouse for an international knitwear company that is still going 30 years leter, and the huge shelves of different coloured yarns that changed every few years were an inspiration to me. The only problem was that I had very little money to afford any of the gorgeous yarns!
Instead I bought cheap acrylics (ironically I was allergic to pure wool), or second hand yarns from charity shops. I still have a huge stash full of vintage yarns that are no longer available in the shops nor online.
Many of my creations are influenced by these vintage yarns, often thinner than laceweight. I love working with very fine yarns and chunky. changing between the two can provide instant relief!
I first stated designing my own knitwear when I became obsessed with knitting socks, using vintage patterns and changng colours every few rows before the wide availability of self-striping yarns.
I now use the long colour changes in self-striping yarns to my advantage in my circular designs. I love to invent new techniques for shaping and use these almost as 'trade marks' to highlight my pieces.
